2020-09-02

On 1 September, President U Win Myint and State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar met respectively with Yang Jiechi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, in Naypyidaw.

Yang highlighted President Xi Jinping’s successful visit to Myanmar last January, which ushered in a new era of China-Myanmar relations. In the fight against COVID-19, the two countries have rendered each other strong support, taking the long-standing “pauk-phaw” friendship to a higher level. Yang expressed China’s readiness to work with Myanmar on implementing the important consensus reached between the leaders of the two countries and building a China-Myanmar community with a shared future.

Noting the 70th anniversary of China-Myanmar diplomatic ties and the Year of Culture and Tourism between the two countries this year, Yang called for closer people-to-people exchanges to promote greater affinity between the two peoples. He said that China will share COVID-19 vaccines, once successfully developed in China, with Myanmar on a priority basis.

Yang urged concerted efforts by China, Myanmar and other parties concerned to add new dimensions to China-ASEAN and Lancang-Mekong cooperation, focus on COVID-19 response and economic growth, and promote peace, stability and common development in the region.

Yang expressed China’s appreciation to Myanmar for its consistent support on issues concerning China’s core interests. Likewise, China will continue to support Myanmar in safeguarding its national sovereignty and dignity.

The leaders of Myanmar thanked China for providing valuable support and assistance for Myanmar’s peace and development, and commended China’s constructive role in Myanmar’s national reconciliation process. They applauded the two countries’ joint fight against COVID-19 as a new chapter in the “pauk-phaw” friendship. Myanmar will work with China to overcome the impact of COVID-19 as quickly as possible, deepen high-level exchanges, seek all-round progress in developing the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, expand people-to-people exchanges, enhance communication and coordination on international stages, and build a China-Myanmar community with a shared future.

Yang also met with Min Aung Hlaing, Commander-in-Chief of Defense Services of Myanmar during the visit.
