|State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi Speaks by Phone with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn|
On 27 April, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone call with Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia.
Wang said that since the start of COVID-19, China and Cambodia have assisted each other like brothers to weather the trying circumstances together. He highlighted the firmest support offered by Cambodia at the crucial moment in China's response efforts. King Norodom Sihamoni and Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk expressed sympathies to President Xi Jinping and provided assistance in cash. Prime Minister Hun Sen visited China at the height of the situation to show his support. China has reciprocated such kindness by sending to Cambodia a government expert group, the first to China's neighbors, and a military expert group, one of the first sent by China globally, and providing medical supplies and sharing diagnostic and therapeutic experience. China is heartened to see that COVID-19 has been largely contained in Cambodia and is confident that the Cambodian people will prevail over the virus under the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Sen.
Wang said that China, since the very beginning, has shared information with the rest of the international community in an open and transparent manner and actively engaged in international cooperation. Such endeavor is welcomed and fully recognized by Cambodia and the overwhelming majority of countries. The more successful China is in fighting the virus, the more inclined some people are to question and denigrate its efforts. The better the cooperation between China and other countries, the more eager some people are to be nitpicking. This fully exposes their bias against China and their ill sense of justice. China commends Cambodia for its opposition to the politicization of the virus and stigmatization, and its staunch support for WHO in playing its due role in battling the virus. Wang expressed confidence that Cambodia will continue to uphold objectivity and justice.
Wang stressed that China-Cambodia friendship, having withstood the tests of the changing international landscape, is further reinforced in the joint fight against the virus. The two countries always support each other on issues concerning their core interests. This serves the interests of both countries and helps to uphold international fairness and justice. Cambodia stands on the side of justice in defiance of power politics, which shows its character as an independent sovereign country. As the two countries celebrate the 10th anniversary of their comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership and the anniversary of the action plan on building a community with a shared future, it is important to implement the common understandings of the leaders and pursue parallel progress in epidemic control and practical cooperation, with a view to taking the bilateral relations, as tested by COVID-19 response, to new heights.
Prak Sokhonn congratulated China on the important gains of its response measures and thanked China for sending expert groups and providing medical supplies. He paid tribute to China's huge sacrifices and the spirit of solidarity shown in this fight. China has not only contained the virus domestically, but also helped other countries to battle the disease. This is true internationalism. Cambodia is ready to work with China more closely in key projects and priority areas to take their cooperation to a new level. The virus is a common threat to humanity. To beat it, the international community must get united rather than divided. Cambodia opposes using the virus to stigmatize China and firmly supports WHO's leading role in international cooperation against COVID-19.
