State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on the phone on 15 April.
Wang noted that as comprehensive strategic partners, China and Iran always understand and support each other. In fighting COVID-19, the two countries have stood by and reached out to each other, and joined hands in fighting the disease. The Iranian people have come together under the leadership of the government. The measures taken by the country are producing results as its epidemic curve is leveling off. China will work more closely with Iran on COVID-19 response and provide further help wherever it can. He expressed his confidence that cooperation between the two countries will be further deepened and the comprehensive strategic partnership strengthened through this joint fight against the virus. The development of China and Iran, two emerging market economies, will continue as an unstoppable trend.
Wang underscored that the virus is a common enemy for all mankind. As the first country to report the virus, China has all along acted in an open and transparent manner to share information and work closely with the international community, and has made important contribution to the global efforts against the virus.
Zarif reaffirmed the Iranian people's heartfelt appreciation for the selfless help from China throughout Iran's COVID-19 response. He noted that under the current circumstances, it is irresponsible and dangerous for certain country to make groundless accusations against China. Iran strongly condemns the unilateral act to pressure the World Health Organization.
The two sides also had an in-depth exchange of views on the situation in Afghanistan. Both agreed that the Afghan issue should be resolved by the Afghan people through dialogue and consultation. Given the current situation, regional countries, in particular neighboring countries, need to play a more positive role in advancing peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan. They agreed to stay in communication and coordination on this issue.
