|President Xi Jinping Speaks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on the Phone|
President Xi Jinping spoke with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on the phone on the evening of 25 March.
Xi stressed the fact that when China was first hit by the virus, Chancellor Merkel had extended sympathies and support to the Chinese side, and the Chinese people will never forget the help they received from the government and various sectors in Germany.
Xi said that the people in China feel keenly for Germany as it faces the challenge of COVID-19. China will render Germany firm support and continue to do what it can to help Germany fight the virus. Chinese and German health experts have had video discussions on COVID-19 response, and an expert from Germany has visited China together with the WHO-China Joint Mission. China is ready to share experience on COVID-19 control and treatment with Germany and strengthen cooperation on research and development of drugs and vaccines. This will contribute to the health and well-being of our own peoples and to global public health security. Xi also wished Germany a speedy victory against the outbreak under Chancellor Merkel's leadership.
Xi noted that the virus respects no borders and presents a common challenge to mankind. No country can wall itself off from its impact. China has stood together with Germany and with Europe in this fight. Together, we have demonstrated to the world the power of solidarity and generated positive energy. The G20 Extraordinary Virtual Leaders' Summit on COVID-19 will soon be held. China will coordinate closely with Germany and all other parties to send a message of solidarity to the world and boost global confidence in defeating the virus. It is important to bear in mind both short- and long-term priorities and the impact that response measures could bring both domestically and globally. Parties also need to enhance coordination in macro-economic policies to keep markets and jobs stable, preserve growth and ensure people's livelihood. At the same time, we need to encourage market openness and make sure that the global supply chain stays open, stable and secure.
Xi stressed the need for China and Germany to further plan for the important political agenda and maintain exchanges and cooperation in various fields. Efforts should be made to ensure stable industrial and supply chains between China and Germany and between China and Europe. The two sides should also tap cooperation potential in emerging industries to mitigate the impact of COVID-19.
Merkel said that in face of the grave situation in Europe, Germany is taking resolute response measures. She thanked China for the timely and valuable support and proposed collaboration with China on research and development of drugs and vaccines and in other fields to set a good example of countries united in the fight against COVID-19. Germany believes in a fact-based, objective and fair approach and international cooperation is the way to go in responding to the outbreak. G20 members need to strengthen coordination and cooperation, support each other, exercise leadership in overcoming the ongoing crisis and stabilizing the global economy. Germany looks forward to continuing the important exchanges and cooperation with China both bilaterally and between Europe and China when the outbreak is over.
