Wang Yi on Three Points of Inspirations from Cooperation among China, the Republic of Korea (ROK) and Japan over the Past 20 Years

2019-08-21

On August 21, 2019, after the ninth Trilateral Foreign Ministers' Meeting among China, the Republic of Korea (ROK) and Japan in Beijing, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with the press together with Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha of the ROK and Foreign Minister Taro Kono of Japan.

Wang Yi said, 20 years ago, amid the aftermath of the Asian financial crisis, China, the ROK and Japan launched their cooperation process to overcome the difficult period and plan for common development. Over the 20 years, the three countries have forged ahead in their cooperation, rain or shine, and scored fruitful achievements. Our cooperation mechanism has been continuously improved and the connotation of cooperation has been increasingly enriched, which has made important contributions to improving the well-being of the peoples of the three countries and promoting the stable development of the region.

Wang Yi noted, cooperation among China, the ROK and Japan has suffered setbacks for several times over the past 20 years. Facts have proved again and again that, facing up to history and looking into the future are the political foundation for trilateral cooperation; building friendships with neighbouring countries and win-win cooperation are the inexhaustible driving forces for trilateral cooperation; and candid communication and enhancing trust constitute important experience for trilateral cooperation. As long as we focus on these three points, the cooperation among China, the ROK and Japan will move forward in a stable and sound manner along the right direction.
