|Wang Yi on the Outcomes of the Trilateral Foreign Ministers' Meeting among China, the Republic of Korea (ROK) and Japan|
On August 21, 2019, after the ninth Trilateral Foreign Ministers' Meeting among China, the Republic of Korea (ROK) and Japan in Beijing, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met the press together with Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha of the ROK and Foreign Minister Taro Kono of Japan.
Wang Yi expressed, the just-concluded Trilateral Foreign Ministers' Meeting has been very successful. At the meeting, we reviewed the extraordinary journey of the trilateral cooperation over the past 20 years, reached important consensus on further deepening our cooperation, and made full political preparations for the eighth leaders' meeting.
Wang Yi said, we believed that facing the complex changes in the international situation, China, the ROK and Japan, as important countries in Asia and today's world, should join hands to defend the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, uphold international law and the basic norms governing international relations, and advocate multilateralism with a clear stance. China, the ROK and Japan should unswervingly promote regional peace and make our cooperation the cornerstone of prosperity and stability in Northeast Asia.
We believed that with downward pressure on the global economy, China, the ROK and Japan, as the three important economies, should enhance macroeconomic coordination and work together to uphold the free trading system and create an open world economy, in a bid to inject fresh impetus into the global economic growth.
We believed that in the face of the latest changes in the Korean Peninsula situation, China, the ROK and Japan, as important parties concerned, should continue to play a constructive role and strive to maintain the hard-won momentum of peace talks and dialogues in the Korean Peninsula. We should promote all parties concerned to meet each other halfway and interact with each other positively, find effective ways to realize the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and establish the peace mechanism on the Korean Peninsula, so as to ultimately achieve lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.
We believed that to respond to the profound changes brought by the Fourth Industrial Revolution, China, the ROK and Japan, as important major manufacturing countries and innovators, should seize the opportunity to strengthen cooperation in areas including big data, artificial intelligence and 5G, tap into cooperation potential, and expand cooperation areas. The Chinese side proposed to make the year 2020 the China-ROK-Japan innovation cooperation year and won positive response from the ROK and the Japanese sides.
We believed that as the so-called "clash of civilizations" resurging China, the ROK and Japan, as Asian countries, should carry forward the wisdom of the East and advocate mutual learning among civilizations. We agreed to take the opportunities of Olympic Games and the Winter Olympics to carry out the Olympic cooperation dialogue, run brand exchange programs of"CAMPUS Asia" and "Culture City of East Asia 2019", in a bid to spread the philosophy of harmonious coexistence of Eastern civilization to the world.
We believed that facing the opportunities and challenges presented in regional cooperation, China, the ROK and Japan, as important countries in the region, should strive to conclude the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) negotiations within this year, accelerate the consultations on the establishment of the China-ROK-Japan free trade area, and advance the building of the East Asian Community. We adopted the concept paper on China-ROK-Japan+X cooperation, and will explore mutually beneficial cooperation and promote common development with other countries on the basis of consensus.
Wang Yi said, taking the presidency, the Chinese side is willing to maintain close communication with the ROK and Japan to fully prepare for the leaders' meeting within the year and ensure a complete success of the meeting. The three sides reached consensus on formulating the China-ROK-Japan cooperation vision for the next ten years, and will complete the consultation as soon as possible and submit it to the leaders' meeting for announcement.
Wang Yi noted, China, the ROK and Japan are close neighbours linked by a strip of water. As a Chinese saying goes, neighbours wish each other well, just as family members do. We all hope that we can live together in harmony and help each other. We pay attention to the difficulties in the recent Japan-ROK relations and support Japan and the ROK to hold a bilateral meeting by taking the Trilateral Foreign Ministers' Meeting as an opportunity. The Japanese and ROK friends follow the concept of understanding each other heart to heart, and we Chinese people treat others in the same way as we expect to be treated. We hope that Japan and the ROK will seriously accommodate each other's concerns, handle differences in a constructive manner, and find proper solutions to problems. We believe that China, the ROK and Japan will surely unite as one and promote trilateral cooperation to usher in a better future.
