Wang Yi Meets with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo of the United States (US)

On August 1, 2019 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo of the United States (US) in Bangkok, Thailand.

Wang Yi expressed, the consensus of various aspects reached by President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump in Osaka in June charted the course for China-US relations. The top priority for now is that the US side should meet the Chinese side halfway, to implement the consensus of the Heads of State of China and the US, to manage and control the differences on the basis of mutual respect, expand cooperation on the basis of mutual benefit and reciprocity, and jointly promote China-US relations based on coordination, cooperation and stability as was agreed by the Heads of State of both countries.

Wang Yi said, Mr. Secretary of State has recently remarked that although China and the US have different values, both share common interests. Therefore, there is much room for both countries to carry out much cooperation. The Chinese side also believes that both sides should strengthen communication, reduce misjudgment, and seek a win-win situation for both China and the US as well as for the world at large. This is in the interests of both sides and is also the broad-based expectation of the international community.

Wang Yi said, China and the US should view each other's strategic intentions in a right way. It is neither fair nor possible to try to obstruct China's development. This is because China has the rights to develop, and China's development, with strong endogenous momentum, is peaceful and unstoppable. The two sides should give full play to the strategic leading role of the summit diplomacy in China-US relations, make good use of all high-level dialogue mechanisms, strengthen consultations in all fields, and translate into reality the vision of the two Heads of State that China and the US can become cooperative partners. The two sides should properly handle differences and sensitive issues. The Chinese side urges the US side to strictly abide by the One-China principle and the three joint communiques between the two countries and treat Taiwan-related issues with discretion. The two sides need to expand cooperation in all fields. It is hoped that the US side will facilitate personnel exchanges between the two countries rather than create obstacles.

Mike Pompeo said, the meeting between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping in Osaka charted the course for the development of bilateral relations in the next step. I am willing to reiterate that President Donald Trump and the US government have no intention to contain China's development and are willing to cooperate with China in various areas. It is hoped that the US-China economic and trade consultations move forward smoothly. The US side will continue adhering to the three joint communiques between the two countries and the One-China policy. The US side supports both countries in enhancing people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and is willing to address issues arising from personnel exchanges between the two countries.

In addition, both sides exchanged views on the Korean Peninsula issue. Wang Yi noted, the leaders of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the US reached important consensus at their summit in Singapore on the realization of complete denuclearization and establishment of a peace mechanism on the Peninsula. The Chinese side supports such gesture. China hopes both the DPRK and the US will seize the opportunity, meet each other halfway and accommodate each other's concerns. We also hope that both sides will formulate a feasible roadmap and promote the political settlement process of the Korea Peninsula issue by taking phased and synchronized steps at an early date. The Chinese side is willing to give support and assistance to restart the DPRK-US consultations. Mike Pompeo said, the US side is ready to implement the consensus reached by the leaders of the US and the DPRK at the Panmunjom meeting as soon as possible and restart the working level contacts with the DPRK side at any time.

Wang Yi also elaborated on the Chinese side's stance on issues concerning the South China Sea, Xinjiang and Hong Kong. He urged the US side to respect the Chinese side's core interests and major concerns, and be prudent in words and deeds. Both sides agreed to keep contact on issues of mutual concern.
