On June 23, 2019, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Minister Elsa Teixeira Pinto of San Tome and Principe in Beijing.
Wang Yi expressed that since China and San Tome and Principe resumed diplomatic relations, the two countries have respected and understood each other, treated each other equally, seen sound development momentum of comprehensive cooperative partnership, and achieved mutual benefit and win-win results. Facts have proved that the resumption of diplomatic relations is in full compliance with the interests of the two countries and peoples. We believe that the government and all political parties of San Tome and Principe will follow the one-China policy steadfastly and deepen bilateral cooperation on the basis of the principle of the resumption of diplomatic relations.
Wang Yi noted that the Chinese side is ready to maintain friendly exchanges with the Sao Tome and Principe side, consolidate political mutual trust and support each other on issues concerning respective core interests and major concerns. We appreciate Sao Tome and Principe's active support for the Belt and Road Initiative and believe that joint construction and cooperation will open up new prospects for bilateral relations. The Chinese side is willing to continue to provide assistance within its capacity for Sao Tome and Principe's economic and social development. As the largest developing countries, China always stands together with developing countries and small and medium-sized countries as well as remains committed to safeguarding the interests of developing countries and supporting democratization in international relations.
Elsa Teixeira Pinto said that China is the first country to establish diplomatic relations with Sao Tome and Principe since Sao Tome and Principe achieved its independence in 1975 and has offered tremendous help to Sao Tome and Principe in its national independence and development, and is therefore a great friend of Sao Tome and Principe. Sao Tome and Principe will firmly adhere to the one-China principle, strengthen political and diplomatic dialogue with the Chinese side, actively promote cooperation in infrastructure and enhance non-governmental exchanges. The joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative will significantly help African countries enhance economy and propel China-Africa relations for greater development.
After the meeting, both sides witnessed the signing of multiple bilateral cooperation agreements together.
