Wang Yi Meets with President of the 73rd Session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly Maria Fernanda Espinosa

On June 17, 2019, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with President of the 73rd Session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly Maria Fernanda Espinosa in Beijing.

Wang Yi said that the current international situation faces challenges from unilateralism and protectionism. Various kinds of bullying and power politics have seriously impacted the international system with the UN at the core and the international order based on the international law. Replacing the international law with the domestic law of one country wins the hearts of no one. It is unacceptable to infringe upon the legitimate rights and interests of other countries through long-arm jurisdiction. Furthermore, pulling the world back to the law of the jungle is to reverse the course of history. We have seen that more and more countries stand up for multilateralism, and the international community generally expects the UN to play a more important role. The UN General Assembly is the most important platform for upholding multilateralism. Over the past year, the UN General Assembly has actively advanced the process of multilateralism and safeguarded the legitimate rights and interests of member states, developing countries in particular. The Chinese side highly appreciates this. It is hoped that the general debate of the current session of the UN General Assembly to be held this September will send out a strong voice of upholding multilateralism and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. China will continue to support the UN in playing its due role in international affairs and is ready to further strengthen cooperation with the UN in various fields.

Maria Fernanda Espinosa said that under the current situation, the international community needs multilateralism and the role of the UN more than ever. With the strong guidance and support of China and other countries, the UN General Assembly has made important progress in advancing multilateralism over the past year. Maria Fernanda Espinosa hoped that the general debate in September will further build consensus of all sides and send a more positive signal. The UN appreciates China's support for multilateralism and its assistance to the work of the UN in such fields as peacekeeping, development and finance. It is hoped that China will actively participate in the preparatory process for the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the UN next year and continue to play an important role in upholding multilateralism together with the UN.
