Wang Yi Talks about the Consensus Reached between Chinese and Cuban Foreign Ministers

2019-05-29

On May 29, 2019, when meeting with the press after holding talks with Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla of Cuba in Beijing, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi briefed the press on the consensus of their talks.

Wang Yi expressed that this year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, as well as the 60th anniversary of the victory of Cuba's revolution. Both as socialist countries, China and Cuba are experiencing a critical historic period of their development and rejuvenation. Next year we will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relationship between the two countries, and China-Cuba relations are at a new starting point.

Cuba is the first country in western hemisphere to establish diplomatic relationship with the People's Republic of China. Over the past 6 decades, no matter what happened in the international landscape, the two countries have always understood and supported each other according to the basic rules of the international relations, and have always been good friends, good comrades and good brothers. The two countries have all along firmly supported each other in following the development path suited to their own national conditions, supported each other in safeguarding sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, as well as worked together to safeguard justice and fairness and uphold justice in the world. The mutual trust and friendship of the two countries has withstood tests and trials and is therefore rock-solid and unbreakable.

We agreed to speed up the implementation of the important consensus reached by President Xi Jinping and President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez during their meeting last year, strengthen strategic communication and coordination, advance friendly exchanges in various areas and pass on the traditional friendship of the two countries.

We agreed that the practical cooperation between the two countries covers extensive fields and enjoys huge potential. The Chinese side is willing to work with the Cuban side to propel cooperation in key areas such as new energy, tourism and bio-pharmaceutical. Cuba is welcome to actively participate in the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative through consultation and cooperation and share the benefits. China hopes and believes that the socialist cause of Cuba will surely overcome all difficulties and constantly make new achievements.

We agreed that at present, unilateralism is surging and bullying is rampant, and international conscience and international rule of law is being shocked. As a Chinese saying goes, "A just cause enjoys abundant support while an unjust one finds little support." We are ready to work with other countries to safeguard the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries. Wanton unilateral sanctions against other countries and long-arm jurisdiction can win the hearts of no one and are therefore not sustainable. As Cuba's fight for national sovereignty and its fight against external interference are righteous, the Chinese side will continue to firmly stand together with the Cuban people.

Exchanging views on the Venezuelan issue, we agreed that the Venezuelan issue can only be resolved by the Venezuelan government and the opposition independently through consultation, dialogue and peaceful means. This is not only in line with the shared benefits of all the Venezuelan people, but also an effort in safeguarding the basic rule governing international relations, namely non-interference in domestic affairs. China and Cuba will step up communication with countries in the region and the international community and continue to play a constructive role in resolving the Venezuelan issue.
