Xi Jinping Meets with Prime Minister Charlot Salwai of Vanuatu

On May 28, 2019, President Xi Jinping met with Prime Minister Charlot Salwai of Vanuatu at the Great Hall of the People.

Xi Jinping pointed out that at present, China-Vanuatu relations are at the peak in history. Both sides have been actively implementing the consensus reached by Mr. Prime Minister and me in our meeting last year, continuously deepening political mutual trust, and constantly expanding exchanges and cooperation in various fields. China-Vanuatu relations are a model of relations between China and Pacific Island countries. The Chinese side is willing to, together with the Vanuatuan side, enhance all-round dialogue, cooperation and exchanges to promote bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership for greater development.

Xi Jinping stressed that China has always advocated that countries, no matter big or small, strong or weak, rich or poor, are equal members of the international community, and opposed great-power chauvinism. The Chinese side highly appreciates the Vanuatuan side's firm adherence to the One-China policy and supports the Vanuatuan side in independently choosing a development path that suits its own national conditions. Both sides should maintain the momentum of high-level exchanges, expand dialogue between the two countries' political parties and between the legislative institutions, and exchange and share experience in state governance and administration, so as to deepen political mutual trust. Both sides should take the signing of a cooperation plan on jointly building the Belt and Road Initiative as an opportunity to strengthen alignment of development strategies, tap into the potential of cooperation and expand practical cooperation in various fields. The Chinese side is willing to deepen agricultural technology cooperation with the Vanuatuan side, support the development of its competitive industries, and continue to encourage competent Chinese enterprises to invest and establish business in Vanuatu. Both sides should strengthen exchanges and mutual learning between civilizations, promote bilateral personnel exchanges, and actively carry out exchanges and cooperation at sub-national level. China maintains the approach of upholding the values of friendship, justice and shared interests and the principle of sincerity, real results, affinity and good faith to strengthen solidarity and cooperation with Pacific Island countries. China pursues no selfish interest or so-called "sphere of influence" in Pacific Island countries, and will always be their reliable good friend and partner.

Charlot Salwai congratulated the People's Republic of China on the 70th anniversary of its founding. He spoke highly of China's great achievements from reform and opening up, and praised that China's success has not only changed its own look but also exerted profound and positive influence on the world. Charlot Salwai expressed that Vanuatu admires China for its insistence on equal treatment of countries no matter they are big or small, rich or poor, strong or weak, and appreciates the Chinese side's long-term and sincere help according to the actual needs of the Vanuatuan side. Vanuatu firmly adheres to the One-China policy, and supports the Chinese government's efforts in achieving China's peaceful reunification. The Vanuatuan side will strengthen cooperation with the Chinese side on such areas as jointly building the Belt and Road Initiative, implementing the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and coping with climate change, and commit to pushing Vanuatu-China comprehensive strategic partnership for constant and forward-looking development.

Yang Jiechi, Wang Yi, He Lifeng and others were present.
