CONSUL GENERAL HU JOINS AUSTRALIAN RED CROSS TO MARK SICHUAN QUAKE'S HALF-YEAR ANNIVERSARY

AT THE INVITATION OF MR. ROBERT TICKNER, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF AUSTRALIAN RED CROSS (ARC), CHINESE CONSUL GENERAL IN SYDNEY MR. HU SHAN ATTEND THE CHARITY LUNCHEON CO-SPONSORED BY ARC AND WAY-IN-NETWORK TO MARK THE HALF-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE 5ยท12 SICHUAN EARTHQUAKE.

"I CAME HERE WITH A HEART FULL OF GRATITUDE FOR YOU ALL." MR. HU OPENED HIS SPEECH BY THANKING ARC AND THE AUSTRALIAN PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY THE CHINESE COMMUNITY, FOR THEIR GRACIOUS SUPPORT OF CHINA'S DISASTER RELIEF WORK.

 

HE THEN BRIEFED THE AUDIENCE OF THE CURRENT SITUATION OF THE DISASTER-HIT AREA, AND ARTICULATELY UNDERLINED THE IMPORTANCE OF CHINA'S RECENT DECISION TO INCLUDE THE RECONSTRUCTION OF DISASTER AFFECTED AREAS AS AN IMPORTANT PART OF ITS ECONOMIC STIMULUS PACKAGE, WHICH "WILL RESTORE THE ECONOMY OF DISASTER-HIT AREA AT AN EARLIER DATE. MORE IMPORTANTLY, IT WILL BRING MORE JOB OPPORTUNITIES, MORE FAMILY INCOME AND OTHER TANGIBLE BENEFITS TO THE PEOPLE THERE."

 

MR. HU ALSO SPOKE HIGHLY OF THE INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS AND THE ARC, ESPECIALLY THE OUTSTANDING HUMANITARIAN CONTRIBUTION MADE BY ARC IN CHINA, WHICH HE BELIEVED HAD NOT ONLY BENEFITED THE CHINESE PEOPLE BUT WAS ALSO CONDUCIVE TO THE CHINA-AUSTRALIA FRIENDSHIP.

 

MR. TICKNER SAID ARC APPRECIATED THE VALUABLE SUPPORT IT HAS RECEIVED FROM THE CHINESE CONSULATE-GENERAL AND AUSTRALIA'S CHINESE COMMUNITY. HE STRESSED ARC'S CONSISTENCE IN HELPING THE PEOPLE IN NEED NO MATTER WHAT THEIR COUNTRY, RACE OR CULTURAL BACKGROUND IS. HE ASKED FOR PEOPLE'S CONTINUOUS SUPPORT.

 

ALSO PRESENT WERE HON. HENRY TSANG MLC, MS. FLORENCE CHAU CHAIRWOMAN OF WAY-IN-NETWORK, MR. JOHN FRIES, CHAIRMAN OF NSW RED CROSS AND OTHER REPRESENTATIVE FROM LOCAL GOVERNMENTS, CHINESE COMMUNITIES AND BUSINESS LEADERS. MR. SUNNY NGAI, MANAGER OF ABC TISSUE, HANDED OVER A CHECK OF AU$ 5000 TO THE ARC AT THE LUNCHEON TO SUPPORT THE LATTER'S HUMANITARIAN WORK IN GUANGXI, CHINA.
