Chinese Embassy Spokesperson:We hope the Australian side stop meddling in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs

2020-07-02

On July 1, the Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in Australia made a response to the statement of Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne regarding the Law on Safeguarding National Security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

We strongly deplore Australian Foreign Minister's statement regarding the Law on Safeguarding National Security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

This legislation, adopted yesterday by the NPC Standing Committee of China, aims to safeguard China's national security and lasting security, prosperity and stability in Hong Kong, as well as to ensure the steady implementation of "one country, two systems". It reflects the shared will of all Chinese people including Hong Kong compatriots.

The law will only target very few criminals but protect the vast majority of Hong Kong people. It will not impact the high degree of autonomy in Hong Kong, neither will it affect Hong Kong's independent judicial power, including that of final adjudication. Its implementation will strengthen Hong Kong's legal framework, ensure social order, improve business environment, and benefit Hong Kong citizens and international investors including those from Australia.

Hong Kong affairs are China's internal affairs. The Chinese government is firmly determined to implement "one country, two systems" and oppose foreign interference in Hong Kong affairs. We hope the Australian side take an objective and rational view on the legislation, abide by international law and basic norms of international relations, and stop meddling in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs.
