Spokesperson of the Chinese Consulate General in Sydney Responding to a Question about the so-called "Wuhan Lab--Coronavirus Leak Theory"

On April 28, an Australian journalist asked: It has been reported that the novel coronavirus might have leaked from a laboratory in Wuhan, China. Do you have any comment?

Spokesperson of the Chinese Consulate General in Sydney answered: The claim that the novel coronavirus might come from a laboratory in Wuhan has no basis in scientific fact and is totally irresponsible.

The available evidence indicates that the novel coronavirus originated through natural processes and was not manipulated or produced in a laboratory, according to the World Health Organization. The scientific community has not yet specified an exact natural origin, but reported that the virus is possibly related to bats and pangolins.(https://www.who.int/news-room/q-a-detail/q-a-coronaviruses)In a study published in Nature Medicine on 17 March 2020, Professor Kristian Andersen from the Scripps Research Institute, CA, USA and other researchers concluded that the virus is not a laboratory construct or a purposefully manipulated virus.(https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-020-0820-9)

China's Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences has nothing to do with the origin of the novel coronavirus. The research facility is a biosafety level 4 laboratory that is able to deal with the world's deadliest pathogens. About 30km from downtown Wuhan, it is impossible for a virus to leak from the P4 lab. The idea that the virus escaped from a lab is just "pure baloney", said Peter Daszak, disease ecologist and the president of EcoHealth Alliance, a nonprofit organisation based in New York, US. He made the remarks in an interview with DemocracyNow."There was no cultured virus that's anything related to SARS-CoV-2. So it is just not possible," said Daszak, who has been working with the WIV for 15 years. (https://www.democracynow.org/2020/4/16/peter_daszak_coronavirus)
